About Us

 Designer. Entrepreneur. Jamaican.

“I woke up one day and decided to try and make a dress. The dress got great reviews when I posted it as my Blackberry Messenger display picture and I decided to hone my skills and turn it into a business.”

Brittany Johnson did not at first think of herself as a designer, but with an artistic background she knew she wanted to pursue a career in which she could create. She was first inspired to become an entrepreneur and start her own business when she discovered her mother’s old sewing machine and began experimenting, discovering a talent which she developed a passion for. Brittany was motivated to start her own business by the tenacious drive to be her own boss. Not willing to yield to the demands of someone else, she instead chose to employ her time and skills on her own schedule, allowing her the freedom to be her own person and to express her rebellious nature through her creations. With the weight of this enterprising jump into entrepreneurship entirely on her shoulders, she is inspired to do her very best at all times.

“My brand is named after my little cousin Mia-Kalani. She is currently 8 years old and loves designing and sewing with me.”

Striking out as Miakalani, a name which means “Mine from the Heavens”, Brittany ventured into the world of entrepreneurship as a self-taught designer with her sense of adventure displayed through in the bold, bright and sexy quality of her products. Though she initially started in 2011 with her Miakalani clothing line, in the year 2014 this transitioned into Miakalani Swim, a line of hand-made swimwear made from the best quality four-way stretch spandex from both local and international suppliers.

Bikinis and monokinis in bold colours, solids or prints, with a variety of designs that range through sexy, risqué, daring and sleek, Miakalani Swim caters to all styles, shapes and sizes, from slim to plus size. Produced in Jamaica, available for shipping worldwide, and custom designed to make a statement, Miakalani Swim embodies the creative elements of Jamaica and the bold personalities of the Jamaican people.

“What drives my creative process is knowing that I have created something unique and all my own and seeing my clients/customers smiles when they wear Miakalani Swim.”
